Exploitation By Health Insurance Agencies

There are hundreds of health insurance agencies with more cropping up on yearly basis. Since they are supposed to be doing a good deed and taking care of the expenses incurred due to medical treatments (the prices for which are sky rocketing every year), ever wondered what is it in for them? Why do they promote such plans with high measures and are always looking for more clients to take up their policies? It is a known fact that everyone suffers some medical problem in their lives and in most of the cases; an insurance amount is claimed within the first 2 years of the policy.

If the statistics are to be believed, the health insurance companies registered a total profit of more than 50% for the year 2008-2009. These figures are limited to America alone. Imagine the sheer value of money all over the world where billions of people have invested in a policy for themselves and their families. This clearly states that hidden behind the mask of goodness, these companies are taking advantage of the financial concerns of all and in the process, accumulating huge amount of reserves.

There is no limit to the total numbers of activities undertaken by these agencies which would come under the tag of immoral keeping the interests of the general public in mind. With the huge reserves that have accumulated over time, the companies have been giving out bonuses, dividends to shareholders and investing in infrastructure, at the same time keeping the premium costs intact and only increasing making a huge dent in the personal finances of those who are not so well off in their lives.

Health insurance agencies claim that the prices are in accordance to the services being offered and if a claim is filed, the client only gets more money than what has been invested. According to them, it is a win-win situation for both parties and all disputes about them making exceptionally high profits are false. If they are to be believed, their average total profits are below 20% because of the last years of recession. Because the profits for the current year are evaluated keeping the last fiscal year as the base, a very bad year is always going to be followed by a magnificent one.

Insurance companies are also companies driven by profit motives and there are a lot of employees and agents whose wages have to be paid for. This amount comes from the premiums which are paid by their clients. However, the sentiments of the general public are that their sentiments should not be exploited to get such high figures. According to them, making profits and accumulating mass cash reserves are two different aspects.

Many groups and nongovernmental organizations have always pressed for a better control mechanism to be implemented along with stern controls over the premium costs demanded by the health insurance agencies. It is only a matter of time before the government might have to intervene and set things in order, a glimpse of which has been shown by the Obama administration.
